Meta elements are used to specify page description, keywords and any other metadata that were not provided using headings. Meta tags include title tag, meta description and meta keywords. Each of them plays an important part in your on-page optimization, so let's see what they're all about: Optimization rules for Title Tag (Page Title) Title is the most important element of on-page optimization. So if you want to position a page in Google for a keyword, start by using that word in the title. It does make sense, doesn't it? Here are some tips to keep in mind: • start with the main title keywords (high importance for search engines); • use relevant keywords for each page of the site (to avoid keyword cannibalization); • use keywords that allow various combinations (positioning for more similar words); • do not include many key words in the title (their value will be diluted); • do not exceed 65 characters (Google will not display in the SERPs the rest of the title);
Optimization rules for Meta Description Meta description (snippet or page description tag) brings no benefits in terms of SEO, but this does not decrease the utility. Its role is to convince the reader to click on the result shown in the SERPs (search engine results pages), therefore to increase the click-through rate (CTR) for the site. It is therefore important to consider the following rules: • use in your meta description some of the key words in the title (and variations such as plural/singular or articulated/inarticulated words) so that search engines display the "original" snippet that you can control; • use phrases to arouse the interest of users but also to describe the website correctly, so that users click on an informed basis (otherwise you will encounter bounce rate problems); • do not exceed 155 characters (consider a description that's under 140 characters, for blogs, because Google will often display the date of the article too, in the snippet); Anti-spam rules for Meta Keywords In the past, this tag has been abused to such an extent that today Google does not further take it into consideration, and Bing and Yahoo give very little importance to it. Although it cannot bring benefits in terms of SEO anymore, this tag can still signal to search engines any spam trends, such as keyword stuffing. Thus, keep in mind to use it with moderation - limit yourself to the use of 5-6 keywords tops. Keep in touch, Alexey |
